Planned Changes To BlogActiv

Posted by Blogactiv Team on 11/12/08

A few weeks ago, I emailed our bloggers to let everyone know that the technical guys at BlogActiv are working on a system upgrade.

In technical speak, this inolves migrating to a more recent version of WordPressMU and changing server. To those of us that don’t speak technical, we are updating the site so that it becomes more user-friendly.

When I emailed about this subject, it was at some vague point in time that was “soon”, but now we are confident that it will happen in a matter of a few days.

Whilst this migration is underway, the site will be up and visible to the world, but it will be not be possible to post blogs or comments. We anticipate that this will last for either one or two full days.

As soon as I know more, I shall share that information. But until then, please consider this to be advanced warning of downtime.

Please accept my thanks in advance for your understanding.

Best wishes,

Stuart Langridge, Director of BlogActiv

The Blogactiv Blogroll Expands!

Posted by Blogactiv Team on 23/10/08

Today sees the launch of the new and improved Blogactiv blogroll. Whilst we liked the old one, we thought that a site of this size ought to be able to commit a full page to our fellow bloggers and the EU blogosphere. This means that we have been able to expand the number of sites we list and offer a brief description about each one.

Of course, we recognise that this list does not include everyone. And we don’t list Blogactiv bloggers either – as of a few weeks ago, they have their own list. Any omissions are likely to be by chance rather than by design.

The blogroll is linked to from the right hand column of our ‘central’ pages and so can be accessed from a large proportion of the site.

If you are an EU affairs blogger and would like to be on the list, or you can recommend a blog that we have missed, please contact us.

We also have plans in progress to expand the scale of our blogroll with additional pages. We are currently looking into ways in which we can add a ‘metablog’ for example.

Best wishes,

Stuart Langridge
Director of Blogactiv

Reaching out to the EU Blogosphere – Aggregation of posts on Blogactiv

Posted by Blogactiv Team on 30/06/08

Since its setting-up eight months ago, Blogactiv has become a central element of the EU blogosphere. A number of Blogactiv blogs are among the most discussed on the EU and the most interesting EU bloggers outsideBlogactiv are all watching what is going on on our platform and leaving comments.

Blogactiv would like to enhance this exchange with the rest of the EU blogosphere and reach out to create an even more interactive exchange with all those who blog on the EU. Over the last weeks, we have therefore created an aggregator for EU blogs, which you can find on the left-hand side bar of the Blogactiv homepage.

We are providing this aggregator as a free service for the community and as a convenient one-stop shop for all those who want to stay up-to-date on what’s going on on EU blogs. In the future, we may add additional features to it.

aggregator.pngThe aggregator provides up-to-date links to posts from more than a hundred blogs on theEuropean Union, along with information on the source of each post. Most of the links are in English and French, but we are also linking to posts in lots of other EU languages, from Swedish over Estonian to Bulgarian and Spanish.

We will try to always keep the lists of blogs that we are aggregating up to date, but if you just started a blog or you have been around for a while but still can’t see your posts appearing on the EU Blogsophere aggregator, just drop us a message so we can include you.

And, last but not least, we would like to know what you think of our aggregator and what features you would like to see added to it – let us know in the comments!

Blogactiv is expanding – Director wanted!

Posted by Blogactiv Team on 11/06/08

Blogactiv is rapidly expanding. Readership has doubled in the last two months. An increasing number of bloggers from all over Europe, individuals as well as organisations is joining our community. iScience, our event blog organised for the French national institute for research in computer science and control (INRIA) at the end of May, is a big success.We have recently re-branded Blogactiv’s visual presentation and added lots of new features to the homepage. Now we are seeking a Director of Blogactiv to maintain the platform’s growth, to expand outreach across Europe and to oversee the commercial development of Blogactiv.

We seek:

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills;
  • Strong web experience and, at least, familiarity with web 2.0;
  • Entrepreneurial experience as a partner running an organisation;
  • Brussels experience and understanding of EU policies, for example work in a media/lobby/NGO, good networks in EU circles.

You offer:

  • Hard-working, bright, entrepreneurial, team-spirit
  • Similar experience in a position of trust and verifiable references;
  • Interest in partnership, with complete package ‘independent’ compensation + bonus + options, and becoming a shareholder;
  • Strong interest in the media and internet;
  • Languages: excellent English and good French, other EU languages a plus.

If you feel that your profile corresponds, send relevant CVs with a short covering letter to: recruitment@euractiv.com.

Blogactiv.eu was launched in a beta phase early in 2008 as a complementary service to EurActiv. Blogactiv provides a platform where ‘Europeans Challenge Europe’. Continuing expansion of the Blogactiv.eu site requires a leader familiar with EU policies and web 2.0.

Blogactiv Reloaded

Posted by Blogactiv Team on 09/06/08

Eight months after its official launch, Blogactiv, the leading blog platform dedicated to European affairs, will put a revamped version online on the 9thof June 2008 with the objective to provide Blogactiv bloggers with the best services and increase interactivity with the European blogosphere.

Welcome to Blogactiv 1.0! After eight months of beta testing, we are now proud to present “Blogactiv Reloaded”. The most notable change of this evolution is the Blogactiv redesign. The new skin goes far beyond just fixing bugs: it also brings simplicity and clarity to the Blogactiv architecture.

We are also pleased to announce a number of strategic changes: improving Blogactiv usability is at the centre of our thinking.

Thus, on the Blogactiv homepage, you can now see a two-level structure. While the first level – the Editor’s Choice – highlights the best article of the week, the second level usually displays the most recent blog posts.

The new tag cloud facilitates navigation and shows which topics are hottest ones.

In order to get more visibility for our Bloggers, we are exposing popular and noteworthy blogs on EurActiv.com and its CrossLingual Network of sites across Europe, which receives more than 500,000 unique visitors every month.

We are also doing a lot to enhance our bloggers community. Blogactiv bloggers’ avatars are now visible on the left-hand side of our homepage. To complement our existing Facebook group, this new feature is meant to better put forward the Blogactiv bloggers community and increase interactivity.

We also take a close look at what is going on within the European Blogosphere, and present Netvibes Universe, a personalized start-page aggregating EU blogs, as well as posts from carefully selected EU bloggers.

This is also the reason why we decided to implement BlogRush, a well-known community-oriented widget with the objective to increase interactivity with EU bloggers.

Blogactiv evolution is an interactive process. If you have questions or if you want to make a comment, do not hesitate to get in touch. Your feedback is welcome!

Welcome to the Beta Version

Use this blog to note and share problems encountered during pre-launch testing with Blogactiv’s technical support.

If you’re reading this, chances are that you’re taking a look under the bonnet of Blogactiv during its ‘beta’, pre-launch testing phase. Welcome in.

The site has a number of known issues that are being fixed. If you do not see an issue in the following list, the best way of bringing it up is to add it using the comment function, below.

Known Issues as of 7 November:

  • Your First Three Posts may appear elsewhere on the site, contrary to what it says on Getting Started. Basically we’re managing what goes on the home page manually, so you can still experiment until further notice.
  • the way we handle languages is still under development – see Languages in this Site

See anything else that needs fixing? Comment!
